How local elections work

Local elections are how residents choose the councillors who represent them on Brightmere Council.

Local elections are how residents choose the councillors who represent them on Brightmere Council.

How representation works

The council area is divided into electoral wards. Councillors are elected to represent those wards and then take part in Full Council, committees, scrutiny and other council business according to the council's constitutional arrangements.

The names and boundaries of wards and the number of councillors are not decided by the website. They come from the competent boundary and electoral process and are published once those arrangements are in force.

What happens during an election

The electoral administration publishes the formal notices and candidate information required for the election. Voting then takes place under the applicable electoral arrangements, followed by a count and declaration of the result.

After the election

Once the result has been formally recorded, councillor information can be updated so residents can see who represents them and how to contact their elected representative.
